What is a Ceramic Coating?

rockville md ceramic coating

A ceramic coating is a long-term durable, transparent layer on your car's paint that acts as a barrier against environmental contaminants such as dirt, road salt, bird droppings, and UV rays.

They make your paint hydrophobic, meaning that water and dirt are less likely to stick to the surface due to its slick nature.

Ceramic coatings also make your car easier to clean and maintain, reducing the frequency of washing and the effort required.

Best of all, they enhance the depth and clarity of your car's paint, giving it a glossy finish that can make it look brand new.

Highly Rated Ceramic Coating Experts In Rockville

Getting a ceramic coating is a long-term investment that many people consider valuable. It is also very important that you chose an experienced professional to install it properly because if applied incorrectly it can lead to a botched job that will be expensive to repair.

At JD Car Detailing our experts have installed ceramic coatings on many vehicles and we follow up with every customer after applying the coating to ensure that the job came out as expected and there are no imperfections left behind.

All of our ceramic coatings include a free lifetime warranty (if the coating fails prematurely due to installation error then we will fix it for you at no extra cost) and one free wash redeemable at any time after application of the coating so that we can inspect the coating after application to ensure that it has cured properly.

To install a ceramic coating it is important that all the proper precautionary steps are taken in order to ensure that the coating actually works and doesn’t fail prematurely.

Our process of applying a ceramic coating to vehicle goes as follows, the vehicle must be: washed, decontaminated, clayed, polished, and finally we apply the ceramic coating with the correct applicator.

Installing A Ceramic Coating Is An Extremely Tedious Process

A ceramic coating isn’t like a traditional wax or sealant where you just apply it with a rag or spray bottle and then buff off. Applying a ceramic coating is a more tedious process. You must allow the coating to “flash” before quickly wiping off the excess ceramic.

Every coating has a different length of a “flash time” and there are also many other factors that may affect the flash time such as temperature or humidity. For example, a coating may be advertised to have a flash time of 1 minute, but in extreme heat the coating may flash in 15 seconds causing the installer to have a very short timeframe to wipe off the excess ceramic.

Due to the meticulous process of applying a coating you have to work in small sections with proper lighting to inspect the paint. If you wait too long to wipe off the excess ceramic then you will be left with “high spots.” A high spot is an area of a panel that you coated but didn’t fully wipe off the paint and it leaves a smear on the vehicle that will stay for years.

The only way to remove a high spot is to polish the paint again and reapply the coating.

This is why it is important that you go with a professional to install a ceramic coating for you. While it may have higher upfront costs, it will save you money in the long-run as opposed to going with an experienced detailer who may damage your vehicle.

Benefits of Getting Your Car Ceramic Coated

Ceramic coating your car offers several benefits that can make it a worthwhile investment:

  1. Paint Protection: Ceramic coatings create a durable, transparent layer on your car's paint that acts as a barrier against environmental contaminants such as dirt, road salt, bird droppings, and UV rays. This helps prevent oxidation and fading of the paint over time.

  2. Enhanced Gloss and Shine: The coating enhances the depth and clarity of your car's paint, giving it a glossy finish that can make it look brand new.

  3. Ease of Cleaning: The hydrophobic nature of ceramic coatings means that water and dirt are less likely to stick to the surface. This makes your car easier to clean and maintain, reducing the frequency of washing and the effort required.

  4. Longevity: Compared to traditional waxing or sealants, ceramic coatings can last much longer—typically several years—before needing reapplication, depending on the product and maintenance.

  5. Resale Value: A well-maintained ceramic coating can preserve the exterior condition of your car, potentially increasing its resale value by protecting the paint from scratches and swirl marks.

  6. Chemical Resistance: Ceramic coatings provide resistance against chemical stains and etching from acidic contaminants, which can damage unprotected paint.

Overall, while ceramic coating involves an upfront cost and some maintenance requirements (such as periodic washing with pH-neutral products), many car owners find the long-term benefits in terms of appearance, protection, and ease of maintenance justify the initial investment.

Is A Ceramic Coating The Right Option For You?

If you are someone who would like to give your vehicle that “showroom shine” with added long-lasting protection then a ceramic coating may be the right option for you.

However, if you plan on selling your vehicle soon than a ceramic coating may not be worth the cost and it may be a better option to book a traditional wash and wax.

Also, if you want something that will protect your vehicle from rock chips or any other type of scratches then a ceramic coating may not be the right option for you because it does not protect against paint damage.

Overall, a ceramic coating is best for someone who would like to protect their vehicle for a long amount of time while giving it the shine it deserves.

Ceramic Coating FAQs

Can I wash my car after the coating is installed?
Once the coating is applied, the vehicle should not get wet for the first 24 hours so it can fully cure.

Can I get the just coating installed without the prep work or paint correction?
We do not apply coatings to vehicles that have not gone through the proper prep and correction as you will not reap the benefits of a coating without it.

Do I still need to wash my car after it gets coated?
A ceramic coating makes it much easier to maintain your vehicle, but you still need to wash it on a monthly basis. Like most things, in order for the coating to last, it needs proper maintenance.

Will a ceramic coating make my paint scratch-proof?
A lot of coatings claim they are scratch-resistant, which they are, but not to the degree you think. When we say the coating will resist light scratches, we genuinely mean very light scratches such as using a quality towel to wipe off a spray wax. It cannot prevent rock chips or other kind of impacts.
